Have you seen the new look for the GROB company website?

The new GROB homepage has been online since the beginning of September. We have spoken to the GROB Marketing Manager, Ms. Marion Immerz, about the reasons for the revamp and the importance of electronic media for GROB.

Ms. Immerz, as GROB went online with a completely new homepage in 2012, it was one of the trendiest websites in the "Tool and mechanical engineering" sector. What are your aspirations now for the new website?

Marion Immerz: Of course, we have set ourselves ambitious goals with the relaunch. We very much wanted the homepage to have a modern and graphically complex design again. Most importantly, we want to increase the visitor numbers to our website through a more attractive presentation of the topics and simple user guidance.

Also, our products and the current topics at GROB should become even more prominent, so that those visiting the website can find the information they want in various ways.

What were the goals for the website relaunch?

As well as modernizing the design by enhancing the graphic and image elements, the focus was very much on making technical improvements. This included the responsive adapting of all content and the perfect display on all browsers and devices. We also wanted to offer our visitors various ways to inform themselfes about the GROB product range. The loading time, security and accessibility of the homepage were also optimized. We hope that all these measures will improve usability and dwell time, increase visitor numbers and create a more powerful presentation compared to the competitors. From a company perspective, it was also about improving the way the future corporate identity is depicted.

What's new about the 2018 GROB website?

The modern design and a generous text/image language stand out immediately, of course. Alongside these design elements, it was especially important for us to highlight the new developments and changes within our company and to its products. When we went online in 2012 for example, topics such as Industry 4.0, digitalization or electromobility were rather like peripheral issues in our company. This already changed dramatically at GROB a few years ago. Today, these topics stand alongside the traditional system and universal machining center business as key topics and were finally given the recognition they deserve when the homepage was relaunched.

Which is the main target group you want to reach with the GROB homepage?

Our target group is widely spread. Of course, we are focusing on our customers, both repeat as well as new customers from the various sectors. Through our homepage, we would also like to reach applicants, banks and also our own employees and report on the latest developments in our company.

You also mentioned applicants. What is the online application procedure like at GROB?

Our "Career" section takes you directly to our current job vacancies, sorted by the GROB sites worldwide. Depending on the site, the potential candidates are shown vacancies sub-divided into company areas. The job is directly linked to the applicant portal, allowing the potential applicants to upload their application directly to our Human Resources department, which guarantees quick processing of the application documents.

What are the other highlights of the new GROB homepage?

Other highlights of the new GROB homepage are our landing pages on each product with their detailed, technical information, application examples, animations and films. The overview of all services, from 24/7 support, material supply, machine inspections through to customer training is also interesting. In the "News" section, we report on the latest developments at GROB. There is now also an intuitive site search with detailed contact information and directions.

Which social media does GROB use and how important are they for the company?

GROB concentrates on the most important social media for the industry such as YouTube, WeChat and the IndustryArena platform. Interested parties can find the latest machining videos, machine information and news articles on the company. The platforms also offer the chance to link information to our website to achieve a broader reach.

Which other electronic media does GROB use?

In fall last year, the new GROB4Care webshop went online at the EMO. This webshop provides GROB customers with parts lists and drawings, as well as customer-specific information such as the current availability of spare parts at the GROB sites. This webshop is also linked to our new GROB website so that the customer can reach all media centrally via our homepage.

INDEX to Focus on Overcoming the Skilled Labor Shortage at PMTS 2019

INDEX will use PMTS 2019 to address how manufacturers of precision parts can harness advanced technology to achieve continued growth despite the industry's ongoing shortage of skilled labor. "The company will be showcasing its iXcenter integrated robot cell in conjunction with a TNL20-11 Swiss-type lathe, as well as demonstrating how the flexibility of its MS-16 multi-spindle lathe can be applied to offer a superior alternative to cam-driven machines," said a company spokesperson.

The TNL20-11 features 11 linear axes, a frontworking attachment with six stations, an autonomous counter spindle and two turrets, each with eight stations providing up to 12,000 RPM and 2.0 kW of power. The TNL20-11 can apply up to four tools simultaneously, and the lower turret can be equipped with a backworking attachment capable of allowing independent machining of the rear of a part. The machine offers identical, twin liquid-cooled spindles with up to 10,000 RPM, 5.5 kW of power and 17.2 Nm of torque.

When integrated with the iXcenter robot cell, the TNL20-11 becomes even more productive. With vertical pallet storage offering 28 slots, this cell uses an articulated arm to load and unload parts and can incorporate secondary process operations or a 3-D measurement device. This increases the throughput potential of the machine without requiring a corresponding increase in operator intervention.

The MS16 uses six independent spindles, each assigned two cross slides, one that can travel in both the X and Z axes and a second that can travel either in the X-axis or Z-axis. Performance is further enhanced by the ability to perform C-axis machining in every spindle position and a highly dynamic synchronous spindle with short acceleration and deceleration times. The machine incorporates INDEX's unique W serration to allow for short changeover times.

At PMTS 2019, the MS16 will demonstrate the machining of three parts traditionally run on cam-driven machines. "While the older technology has traditionally been viewed as the fastest possible way to produce simple, high volume parts, INDEX will showcase how multi-spindle technology can achieve comparable cycle times. The MS16 also offers the benefit of being fast and easy to changeover, providing a stark contrast to cam-driven machines, which require a high degree of skill and significant amount of time changeover," said the spokesperson.

Chasing after Volumetric Accuracy on 5 axis Machining, Solutions from GROB

One of the toughest challenges in five-axis machining of large parts is maintaining accuracy throughout the entire workzone.

Ideally, a five-axis machine can produce results with the same accuracy whether cutting in the far corners of the workzone or at its center. Grob Systems (Bluffton, Ohio) has developed a method of checking and compensating for possible distortions to a machine’s structure caused by the weight of a massive workpiece when it is machined in five axes. Grob, a manufacturer of five-axis universal machines and production systems, says its new method improves the accuracy of five-axis machines, especially those called upon to produce large, complex parts and components for critical applications.

This is a summary of the company’s explanation of how this new system works: The traditional approach to improving machine accuracy is to use laser interferometry to compensate for the position accuracy of the individual axis and the ball bar measurement to improve the perpendicularity between the axes. This is a simple technique and useful only for the three linear axes of the machine. When the spindle and table start moving around the work envelope, infinitely more deviations (both translational and rotary) come into play. That is the fundamental problem, and it becomes exponentially more complex when two additional rotational axes are introduced.

To improve the process for increasingly complex machines, Siemens pioneered the use of a six-dimensional pictorial compensation map. A 3D laser is used to simultaneously measure yaw and axis alignment, feeding data back to the machine’s control. The resulting picture is comprised of many points throughout the workzone. This creates a much better measurement of geometry and positioning, allowing the CNC to compensate for distortion and improve volumetric accuracy anywhere in the workzone. The limitation of this approach is that the checks and compensation take place on the factory floor during final assembly, and it is available only for linear axes. In the real world, once you put a part on the pallet, everything changes. Consider the capacity of some larger five-axis machines to accommodate loads as heavy as 3,000 pounds. When a mass of that size is put into rotation on a five-axis machine, possibly suspended at 90 degrees, it creates a powerful force for distortion.

Simultaneous to the software developments at Siemens, Grob developed a function called Automatic Kinematics Adjustment. This process locates the true center of rotation, which is critical to accuracy in a five-axis workzone. It works like this: A spindle probe is paired with a precision sphere mounted on the pallet. A kinematic cycle touches probe to sphere, and then rotates to reposition the rotary axis. This action then repeats. Chasing the sphere around the five-axis envelope in this manner identifies the true center of rotation. The entire process takes about 10 minutes. Grob has now integrated its kinematic process with the Siemens software to create what it calls the Grob Swivel Axis Calibration (GSC) for shopfloor use. GSC applies the same basic software package used for Automatic Kinematic Adjustment but takes it beyond the center of rotation. A probe stored in the tool magazine chases the sphere to map positional accuracy all around the workzone.

By spinning and rotating the pallet, the probe identifies any rotational or translational deviation—from top to bottom of the Y stroke, maximum X to maximum Z, and everything in between. The measured deviations are sent to the compensation software, which then perfects positioning accuracy. The process can be applied to any critical component assigned to the Grob machine. “This is a great step forward for positional accuracy in a five-axis, volumetric environment,” says Bill Vejnovic, vice president of the company’s Universal Machine Division. “We can’t change physics, but we can place the sphere on top of a 3,000-pound part, run the same kinematics program, and compensate for distortion of any physical effect on the machine structure. On the larger machines, you can image the impact this can have on overall accuracy.” By Mark Albert of Modern Machine Shop Magazine

Multitasking solutions to increase the productivity and precision of machining processes

SORALUCE develops new multitasking solutions which are capable of carrying out milling, turning and grinding operations in one single machine

   The European manufacturer’s technology allows a wide range of machining functions to be completed in one machine, on parts of different sizes and shapes, with a high level of efficiency and precision

   The firm’s capabilities in the development of multitasking solutions will be on show at the TECHNOLOGY DAYS 2018 event which will take place from the 12th to the 16th of November in Limburg (Germany)

The multitasking solutions, which allow different machining operations to be integrated into one single machine, make it possible to reduce cycle times, save on costs and increase the efficiency of the machining processes.

In this sense, the European manufacturer of machine tools SORALUCE has reshaped the concept of “multitasking”, traditionally associated with the integration of turning and milling in one machine, thanks to the development of advanced technologies which allow the addition of grinding. This last operation is the phase which requires the highest level of precision during the machining process and the one which concludes the manufacturing of high added value industrial components.

“The technologies that we have developed at SORALUCE make it possible for the different stages of the machining process of components to be carried out using the same machine, efficiently, and providing high-precision results”, guarantees Andres Mazkiaran, Multitasking Product Manager at SORALUCE.

The multitasking concept developed by the company, which can be incorporated into the entire range of the manufacturer’s machines, provides advantages such as cutting the amount of time dedicated to the loading, unloading and centring of parts as, given that the different tasks are carried out in one machine, these operations need only be completed once.

But, in addition to this, choosing a multitasking system implies a reduction in investment in terms of the number of equipment, a decrease in the amount of space needed in the plant itself as well as the number of operators required.

Therefore, the multitasking systems are versatile, compact, provide great flexibility, increase efficiency in the process, are flexible and make it possible to produce small batches efficiently.

Own technology

The SORALUCE multitasking centres are equipped with mechanical transmission and high-torque multitasking indexing heads and SORALUCE tables which provide a high level of versatility as they make it possible to machine parts of different sizes and shapes.

With extensive experience in the field of milling and turning, SORALUCE develops customised cycles to complement the systems of manufacturers of numeric controls (CNC), such as the kinematic management of the heads which, using one tool corrector in the whole area, facilitates the programming of simple geometries and makes it possible to move from one process to another in the multasting solutions or customised cycles for different milling, turning and grinding processes.

The competences of SORALUCE in the area of multitasking will be on display at the TECHNOLOGY DAYS event which SORALUCE will hold from the 12th to the 16th of November at their SORALUCE BIMATEC Centre of Excellence located in the German city of Limburg.

At the event, the manufacturer will showcase its development of SORALUCE TA-M, a piece of equipment which is able to carry out milling, turning and grinding operations for parts of different sizes and shapes, with great efficiency and precision.

“This solution means that the number of settings required, and the time needed to prepare the parts are reduced. It also minimises cycle times and the risk of mistakes, subsequently meeting the high versatility, productivity and efficiency requirements of the multitasking concept. It’s a model which was created in response to the machining requirements of highly-demanding components”, adds Andres Mazkiaran.

Concretely, SORALUCE TA-M has the SORALUCE H200T multitasking head, equipped with an innovative spindle rotation locking system which allows it to use milling and turning tools directly, making the use of intermediate elements unnecessary.

Also, the machine includes a milling and turning table with a capacity for parts of 8000 kilograms for milling and 2000 kilograms for turning and a speed range of 6 ÷ 400 rpm.

Designed to provide maximum stability, the solution has vertical travel of 1250 mm and cross travel of 1200 mm and its high level of power means that it can complete roughing operations with a substantial cutting depth.

Therefore, this solution can carry out grinding operations incorporating specific cycles which make programming the different operations extremely easy.

Compact and ergonomic, it’s worth highlighting the ease with which the work area can be accessed, featuring front and back entrances in order to facilitate the setting-up of parts and measuring operations as well as monitoring the machine’s operation.

Manufacturing Production Soared in December by John Carney (Jan 18th, 2019)

Production at American factories boomed in December.

Output at U.S. factories grew 1.1 percent last month, the Federal Reserve said Friday. Economists had expected industrial production to be flat to barely rising. Compared with a year ago, industrial production rose 4 percent in December.

Vehicle production jumped 4.7 percent in the month, boosted by demand for light trucks. Compared with a year ago, vehicle production is up 7.8 percent.

Construction supplies production rose 1.6 percent.

Business equipment production was up 0.5 percent, which is a good indicator that U.S. businesses continued to invest in expansion despite the rocky performance of the stock market in December. For the year, this is up 5.0 percent.

Factory output accounts for about 75 percent of overall industrial output, which rose 0.3 percent for the month. That was in line with the forecast. On an annual basis, total industrial production rose 4.0 percent, much higher than 2.9 percent in 2017 and  2016’s paltry 0.5 percent gain.

Mining production rose 1.5 percent, a sharp and unexpected increase.  Production at utilities fell 6.3 percent, likely because December was unseasonably warm in much of the country.

Capacity utilization, which measures actual production against what factories could potentially produce, rose by 0.1 percent to 78.7 percent. Economists had predicted a slight decline.
The jump in factory output indicates that tariffs on steel and aluminum are not weighing on the U.S. as much as critics claimed they would. And the new tariffs on Chinese products, combined with tax cuts, appear to be encouraging domestic manufacturers to expand production.

The December industrial production numbers indicate that earlier anecdotal reports and surveys that suggested a manufacturing slowdown were offbase.
