Marvel Miter Cutting Performance and Accuracy
Written by: Dean Saari – Director of Engineering at Marvel
Many variables play a role in achieving accurate parts.
Blade – using the correct blade, pitch, and tooth configuration for the material. A dull blade will deviate as it cuts.
Feeds and Speeds – overfeeding a blade will cause it to deviate from a straight cutting line.
Material – bowed material can prevent it from sitting flat on the saw table. Likewise, bowed material can slide in the vises as they close. Material height plays a major role in accurate miter cuts.
Tilt Angle – Properly calibrated tilt and offset settings help assure accurate angle positioning for miter cutting. Angular positioning plays a significant role in achieving accurate miter cut parts.
Shuttle Positioning – Marvel utilized a precision calibrated mapping processes in assuring the most accurate shuttle positioning possible within our servo driven systems. Even still, some inaccuracy remains, however, we always position within our stated positioning accuracy specifications.
Installation – As related to the alignment of the saw to the material handling and the pass line, if material snags or drags, it stands a chance of slipping in the vises. Also, if the pass line is not level the material could be off the table when cutting.
Environment – Care MUST be taken to achieve accurate miter cut parts. A chip under the material can raise the material enough to cause out of tolerance parts. There must be a balance between the accuracy required and care required to achieve that accuracy. The saw doesn’t have control over many of these variables related to miter cutting accuracy
